Networking

Today's vehicles contain hundreds of circuits, sensors, miles of wiring, and many other electrical components. These components are becoming networked together via standardized serial communication protocols; the two most popular being SAE J1850 and CAN (Controller Area Network). For more background on networking please see our Networking Background Document. Intel was a key player in the development of the CAN protocol in the mid `80s and developed the first CAN controller, the 82526. Intel supports the latest CAN specification, version 2.0, with the 82527 and two integrated 16-bit microcontrollers, the 87C196CA and 87C196CB. Recently, J1850 network protocol support has been integrated onto the 87C196LB, providing customers with top to bottom networking solutions.
