For technical support, contact your place of purchase -- which will have the most current information about your specific product or configuration. You also can check the Intel FAQ for that product.

Frequently Asked Questions: Advanced/EV

  • Which Pentium(r) processor speeds are supported on Advanced/EV motherboards?

All Advanced/EV motherboards will support Pentium processors from 75 MHz to 133 MHz.

Only Advanced/EV motherboards with a "Socket 7" and Jumper J1N1 will support the 150 MHz, 166 MHz, and 200 MHz Pentium processors.

  • What are the switch settings for the various Pentium processors on the Advanced/EV?

Switch information for the Advanced/EV with a 150, 166 or 200 MHz Pentium processor:

    Processor
    Speed
    Switch 6Switch 7Switch 8Jumper
    J1N1
    150onoffoff5/6
    166ononon5/6
    200offonon5/6

Note: Only Advanced/EV motherboards with a 'Socket 7' and jumper J1N1 can support the 150, 166, or 200 Mhz Pentium processors. See also the configuration jumpers document.

  • What kind of microphone should be used with the Advanced/EV?

An unbalanced microphone, either electret or dynamic, with an output voltage level range between around 30mv to 200mv and an impedance of 200 to 2K will work. Please note that microphones shipped with Creative Labs sound cards were designed to work with the circuitry found on those add-in cards, and will not necessarily perform the same with the Advanced/EV Vibra16 on-board component.

  • How can I improve the audio quality of recordings?
You should use 16-bit stereo recording settings for higher sound fidelity. We've found that 8-bit recordings produce a higher amount of background noise. You also should verify that the audio input you are using is set at the desired recording level and that the other audio inputs are muted. The line-out amplifier is sufficient to drive headphones. Amplified external speakers may be used if higher volume output is desired.

  • How can I get audio CDs to play on the Advanced/EV?
    You can do the following:
    1. Install a set of headphones into the CD-ROM audio output jack. This step will verify that the CD-ROM can play audio CDs.
    2. Verify that the audio CD cable is connected and matches the following SoundBlaster* 16 pin-out:
      	CD-ROM AUDIO INTERFACE
      	Pin Signal Name
      	1	Ground
      	2	CD-Left
      	3	Ground
      	4	CD-Right

    3. For Windows* and Windows 95: verify that the CD-Audio MCI driver is installed.
      • In Windows 95, go to the Multimedia option in Control Panel and click on the Advanced tab. In the Multimedia Devices list, click the plus (+) sign next to Media Control Devices. If CD-Audio Device (Media Control) does not appear in the list, the driver has not yet been installed. To enable this driver, click CD Audio Device (Media Control), and then click the Properties button. In the properties dialog box, click "Use This Media Control Device". Refer to your Windows 95 documentation for the procedure to install the CD audio MCI driver.
      • In Windows 3.1x, you can verify that the [MCI]CD-Audio driver is installed by clicking on the drivers icon in Control Panel.

  • How can I disable the Vibra16 audio component on the Advanced/EV?

For non-plug and play operating systems (DOS, Windows, WFW, etc.)

    1. Enter the BIOS CMOS Setup during the Power-On Self Test.
    2. Select "Audio Configuration" under the "Advanced" menu.
    3. Select "Disabled" for Configuration mode.
    4. Save and exit the BIOS setup.
    5. Continue with the boot process.

    For Windows 95:

    1. Double click on the "System" icon in the "Control Panel" folder.
    2. Expand "Sound, Video, and Game Controllers" by clicking on "+" sign.
    3. Highlight "Creative Labs Sound Blaster 16 Plug and Play".
    4. Select "Properties" and deselect the "Original Configuration".
    5. Restart Windows 95.

  • How can I get the Advanced/EV's on-board audio component to operate in Windows* 95?

The sound drivers that ship with Windows 95 should be used for the onboard Vibra 16. You should do the following when using Windows 95 on the Advanced/EV motherboard:

    1. Upgrade to BIOS version 1.00.05.CB0 or higher
    2. In the Setup utility, select the Advanced menu, then the Plug and Play submenu.
    3. Set Configuration Mode to "Use ICU" and set Boot with PnP OS to "Windows95 tm".
    4. Press the [F10] key to save the setup values and reboot.
    5. Use the Windows 95 device manager to remove the onboard sound
    6. Use the Multimedia Option in "Control Panel" to remove the loaded sound drivers
    7. Restart Windows 95 allowing Windows 95 to autodetect the onboard sound and to load the necessary sound drivers automatically.
