Systems which require I/O processing and serial data transmission are very software intensive. The commu- nication task and I/O operations consume a lot of the system's intelligence and software. In many conventional systems the central processing unit carries the burden of all the communication and I/O operations in addition to its main routines, resulting in a slow and inefficient system.
