SystemSoft Corporation's flash card support offers seamless integration between flash media and the system via the Flash Translation Layer (FTL) media format. The FTL software format was jointly proposed to the PCMCIA Committee by M-Systems and SCM Microsystems in 1993 and approved in 1996. It specifies a way for data to be stored on flash media, thus enabling lower-cost and higher-performance flash memory cards.
SystemSoft includes TrueFFS software from M-Systems Flash Disk Pioneers to support flash memory cards in CardWorks, its industry leading Windows95 PCMCIA software product. The inclusion of M-Systems' FTL product, TrueFFS, enables Intel's Flash memory card family to work under Windows95 without the end-user forfeiting PnP capabilities. SystemSoft licenses TrueFFS (separately for the DOS and Windows 3.1x CardWizard* product and included within CardWorks for Windows95 product) to system vendors, PC Card vendors and embedded market customers. Future SystemSoft PC Card products will incorporate the same M-Systems TrueFFS software.
TrueFFS incorporates FTL, the flash file system jointly promoted by M-Systems, SystemSoft, and Intel Corporation. FTL enables compatible data transfer from devices such as digital cameras, voice recorders, cellular phones, and personal digital assistants (PDAs) to the PC. TrueFFS is a total flash memory management system that enables flash memory to emulate a traditional disk drive.
A flash card formatted under SystemSoft FTL is compatible with the other FTL software solutions provided by SCM or M-Systems. This will allow for easier data interchange across system platforms. FTL is the flash card data structure approved by PCMCIA. SystemSoft implements a complete Memory Technology Driver (MTD) solution which is a specific driver written for a particular vendor's type of flash memory card. SystemSoft provides MTDs for all of Intel's Flash memory cards.
